IS IT DROUGHT OR FAMINE?.

We have to admit to the fact that drought is really being a big problem facing the most parts of our country, Kenya. People living in Ukambani have been affected by the fact that there's no rain .For example, since this year began it's so true that the parts of Ukambani have received very little rain to the extent that they can't harvest any water, meaning that there has been no rain at all.

The question they keep on asking themselves is that for how long will this continue? People living in the places like Mwala and Yala are staring at starvation as the dry spell persists.Kitui and  Makueni being named among the Kenya's worst-hit counties that have been warned to semi arid regions, will continue experiencing severe drought in the coming decade.

As we all know ,this will continue to increase poverty and rural-urban migration. However, the government has been assuring that they have measures to alleviate poverty and eradicate the problem of hunger. The big problem is water , drought,,how should it be even addressed because the situation is really being critical.

As we speak now food prices have gone up for the past few months only God knows when things will get back to normal and this has really affected the life of many families. We have different level of people and we have to look from every angle to ensure that everyone is safe and surviving, not starving .It would be good if there was food in their gardens at least they could pick some cereals , vegetables and other things to feed on but no there is nothing at all not even animal's pasture.

Many have been asking questions what might have been causing drought because it hasn't happened once or even twice but has been repeating itself .From the research done by different people interested in this field, the root cause of the country's vulnerability to drought is rain . Agriculture which is the backbone of the economy of Kenya is almost entirely rain-fed . Water for human consumption and other uses is derived from rivers whose recharge depends on rainfall.

Some of the obvious causes of this drought is inadequate rain ,deforestation, forest encroachment and other causes .The people have to also take the responsibility too by trying to plant trees during rain and also stop cutting trees without replacement. However many families have been depending on the trees because they cut to burn charcoal this making them to cut the trees even when they don't want to.

As the people try to ensure that they plant trees, and harvest plenty of water during the rain the government should also help in providing water through digging boreholes and supply water during drought. It should also supply food to these people not only in Ukambani but other parts of Kenya.
